Sunday, September 10th 2017

Ashbourne-Donaghmore Parish formally began its preparations for the World Meeting of Families 2018 this weekend with an International Family Mass, followed by a Family Day in the Parish Hall and adjoining grounds.  Led by the parish Folk Group, Mass began with ‘We are the Family of God’.  In his homily, Fr. Ciarán encouraged families to unite in prayer using Pope Francis’ 5-finger prayer.   The Prayers of the Faithful were read in some of the languages of the many families living in our parish: English, Irish, Malayalam, Russian, German, Mandarin and Spanish.  The community joined with Baby Cooper and Baby Sadie’s families as they were baptised into the family of God in the sacrament of baptism, and the Kingston family presented an image of the Holy Family, along with the World Meeting of Families 2018 logo.  After Mass celebrations continued in the Parish Hall where families joined together for refreshments, food, music, dance, face painting, along with the many groups who showcased their activities as users of the Parish Hall.   Donations from a raffle on the day will assist in enabling a family from overseas to attend and participate in the World Meeting of Families.

Fr. Derek expressed his thanks to the efforts of the organising committee, the support of local businesses, the many who behind the scenes who prepared the church, the Parish Hall and environs, the Irish Red Cross, the Parish Pastoral Council, the Hall Development Committee, musicians – The Lost Boys, those who prepared and served refreshments on the day.  He expressed particular thanks to the families from Kerala, India who prepared a traditional floral carpet which decorated the Sanctuary of the church.   He wished them every blessing as they celebrated the Festival of Onam this weekend.
