The Value of Human Life ~ Maria Steen
Saturday, February 3rd 2018

Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae (25 March 1995) reminded all Catholics of the “pressing appeal addressed to each and every person, in the name of God: respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life!”  Following the recent decision to hold a referendum on repealing the 8th Amendment of the Irish Constitution, Maria Steen was invited to address our parish community on ‘The Value of Human Life, as we witness to the Gospel of Life.

The Value Of Human Life
Today in Ireland we stand at a crossroads. There are those who wish to remove the protection of the law for children before they are born.  Contrary to what people think, the Eighth Amendment is not a constitutional ban on abortion. Rather, it recognises the right to life of the child before birth. This is
what we will soon be asked to vote away: the most basic human right of all – the right to life – from the most vulnerable of all human beings – the infant in the womb. By taking those rights out of the Constitution, we leave all babies vulnerable. Read on »

Buy a Brick Campaign!
Tuesday, January 30th 2018

Ashbourne-Donaghmore Parish recently twinned with Ikire Parish in Nigeria as it launched this year’s Confirmation Preparation Project.  The Parish’s needs are great and urgently require the construction of toilets and the provision of a well for clean running water and crop irrigation.

Students will receive many gifts, including the gifts of the Holy Spirit at the time of their Confirmation.  As families in our parish prepare for the World Meeting of Families, Confirmation students are invited to pledge a number of bricks from the money gifted  to them at Confirmation time which will assist in providing toilet facilities and running water for the children in Nigeria.  Each brick costs just €10!  €6,500 is required to complete the projects.

Who can help?

Individual families, businesses, community groups etc..  Students can work together on initiatives to raise money: cake sales, sponsorship, personal pledges, coffee mornings etc.,

Internet/Phone Safety Pledge
Tuesday, January 30th 2018

Students and parents preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation were recently addressed at Mass by Community Garda, Barbara Kelly on the importance of Internet/Phone Safety.  The theme of the Mass was ‘Be Aware of What You Share’.  Each student was presented with an Activity Sheet highlighting the importance of using our phones and to communicate a message that is positive and safe when using the internet and smart phones.  Parents and children were encouraged to enter in to a ‘Phone-Internet Contract’ (below) to ensure their safety on line.

Congratulations to Neighbouring Parish Priest of Dunboyne-Kilbride Parish
Friday, January 5th 2018

Ashbourne-Donaghmore Parish extends it’s congratulations to Monsignor Dermot Farrell following his recent appointment by Pope Francis as Bishop of Ossory.  We pray he will be a shepherd after the Lord’s own heart to the people of Ossory.  May he be blessed and sustained in his new ministry.

Statement of Bishop Michael Smith on the appointment of Monsignor Dermot Farrell as Bishop of Ossory

I warmly welcome the announcement today that Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Dermot Farrell, Vicar General and Parish Priest of Dunboyne, as Bishop of Ossory.

Since his ordination in 1980, Monsignor Farrell has served the Diocese of Meath with exemplary dedication, pastoral zeal and an immense capacity for work.  His ministry in the Cathedral parish of Mullingar, Tullamore and Dunboyne has been characterised by fidelity, energy and commitment. Following his arrival in Dunboyne and Kilbride as Parish Priest in 2007, Monsignor Farrell initiated new pastoral programmes and renewed the parish churches and schools in one of the largest and most rapidly developing parishes in the Diocese of Meath.  He brought to the role of Vicar General his particular ability to discern calmly and clearly.  He has been a great support to me personally and a well-respected brother to our priests. Christmas & New Year Blessings
Friday, December 29th 2017

“For to us a child is born,
To us a son is given.
And the government will be upon his shoulder;
and his name will be called
“Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is 9:6)

We wish all our parishioners every peace and blessing during this Christmas season.  A warm welcome home to those who have travelled from overseas to be with their loved ones this Christmas and those who are visiting our parish for Christmas.  We welcome those who have moved into our Parish in the last year…..we hope you make Ashbourne your home.  We also remember family members and friends throughout the world unable to travel home because of work commitments, distance, or cost.  Although we are separated by distance, we unite with them in thought and prayer in this Christmas season.

We welcome Colin Bell, father of the late Kevin Bell who joins our Parish this weekend as we begin our Advent journey.  The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was established to honour Colin and Eithne’s son Kevin, who died tragically in America in 2013.  From their own experience they wanted to alleviate the financial hardship of other bereaved families whose loved ones died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances and assist in their repatriation back to Ireland.  Through their own experience, they wish to offer PEACE to families.
